Woods Gone Wild! Park Plans GIANT Opening

On August 26, the City of Hillsboro held a kid-focused opening event where disability community members, community partners, stakeholders, and their families could celebrate the opening of the area’s first inclusive park and playground.

The MIG-designed, 11-acre park includes enormous tree stumps and vibrant butterflies; forest forts; a custom sand and water play creekbed; a games area with ping pong, cornhole, foosball, and games tables; woodland paths; a hammock tree grove; an open meadow; a fitness and parkour course; shade structures; a picnic pavilion; a restroom building; stormwater features; and a 75-car parking area. About 200 new trees and tens of thousands of plants were selected for their climate resiliency, low water use, and seasonal beauty.

The showstopper, of course, was the unveiling of Oro, the gentle giant whose body creates space for social, physical and adventurous play, as well as quiet places for hiding or peaceful solitude. The inclusive play structure provides both ground-level play and climbing opportunities inside and out.
