Charlotte Plan Wins National APA Award

Charlotte Future 2040 is a comprehensive plan to harness and direct the City's unprecedented growth, with a focus on equity. It was awarded the National Daniel Burnham Award for a comprehensive plan.

“The innovative engagement and planning analysis used for Charlotte Future 2040, combined with an accessible web-based format and a strong link to implementation, is a national example for communities around the country to employ,” said Ben Hitchings, FAICP, 2023 APA Awards jury chair. “The dedication to integrating equity and inclusivity throughout the entire process was remarkable.”

The MIG planning team elevated community voices not typically heard in the planning process, including low-income communities, communities of color, non-English speaking residents and youth. Over 40 methods of engagement — including the Charlotte Planning Card Game, a TikTok challenge, virtual scavenger hunt, and more — brought over 6,500 community members into the effort.

To analyze data through an equity lens, planners utilized new tools to identify disparities and better understand differences in access in under-served areas throughout the city—as well as the policy decisions that have enabled those disparities.

“This award serves as a reminder that by working together, we can overcome challenges, address disparities, and build a future where every community member's needs are not only heard but prioritized,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. “We are inspired by this recognition to continue our mission of a city that truly serves and uplifts all residents.”
